Arla has achieved its aim of eight of its sites gaining the ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards.
Arla published its commitment, in its 2004 annual report, to have all its dairies and two creameries certified to these environmental and health and safety standards by 2006. Lockerbie dairy has since been built and will receive certification next year.
The ISO 14001 environmental management standard focuses on waste disposal methods, energy utilisation and emissions, while OHSAS 18001 is about creating a culture where health and safety is a priority, and includes reducing accidents and risks at sites.
George Plemper, Arla's group work environment manager, recalls: "When I discussed the requirements of the standard with the operations team and central personnel we knew it would be tough however we have now rose to the challenge and more than surpassed the standards of our closest competitors.
"We are leading the dairy industry in terms of environmental and health and safety systems at our dairies," said George, who explained that cross-company teams, with complementary skills, were set up to share knowledge and help Arla deliver its targets.
"It is a huge achievement for the company and a clear demonstration of the commitment to gaining these standards by Arla's employees," he added.
